Playground spaces versus new construction at Bonham Academy

Parents are objecting to the construction of a new two-story building at Bonham Academy, an in-district charter in the King William historic district, because it would break up the remaining playground space. “Bonham parents upset with playground plan”, Maria Luisa Cesar, San Antonio Express-News, November 10, 2012.

Parents are concerned about the loss of green spaces, and worry that the lack of playgrounds will affect the students’ health:

The debate is an opportunity to set an example for all San Antonio schools on the need for playgrounds and recess and a policy that protects both, said state Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, a Bonham parent.

In June, preservationists succeeded in protecting a historic house next to the school; San Antonio ISD officials had hoped to relocate the house and use the land for school expansion.
