Speculation about why Perez ran for SBOE: Payback?

Express-News columnist Gilbert Garcia shares speculation about why Marisa Perez ran for State Board of Education:

The payback theory goes like this: [Leticia] Cantu-Cortez, the wife of newly elected state Rep. Phil Cortez, was bitter about her surprising 2011 District 4 City Council loss to political newcomer Rey Saldaña and decided to take out some of her angst on [Dr. Michael] Soto, who went against the establishment grain and endorsed Saldaña early in the race. So she and [Rafael] Diaz recruited Perez to settle the score.

“The big payback in SBOE race”, Gilbert Garcia, San Antonio Express-News, January 4, 2013.

Garcia praised Soto in another recent column, “Soto gives SBOE a thoughtful parting gift”, San Antonio Express-News, December 22, 2012, about rule changes that will hopefully tone down the textbook wars.
