Gift from Halsell Foundation fuels KIPP San Antonio expansion; First Friday Breakfast March 1

The Ewing Halsell Foundation is making a major grant to KIPP: San Antonio to fund expansion. “KIPP San Antonio snags $5 million gift”, Lindsay Kastner, San Antonio Express-News, February 23, 2013.

KIPP: San Antonio currently has four campuses: KIPP University Prep high school, KIPP Aspire Academy and KIPP Camino Academy middle schools, and KIPP Un Mundo Dual Language Academy elementary school. The $5 million Halsell gift will help KIPP: San Antonio grow to 15 campuses serving 8400 students by 2024—part of the Choose to Succeed program to dramatically increase the number of seats at high-performing charter schools in San Antonio.

Comments from the leaders:

“This incredibly generous donation will enable us to continue on our growth plan to serve more needy kids in this city,” [KIPP: San Antonio CEO Mark] Larson said. He estimated that the expansion plan will cost $17 million.

“High performing public charter schools like KIPP prove what’s possible for all kids, and we are delighted to invest in schools that increase college readiness and graduation rates,” Ewing Halsell Foundation Manager Jackie Moczygemba said in a prepared statement.

Also, the next First Friday Breakfast will be from 7:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on March 1 at KIPP University Prep, which is located inside Trinity Baptist Church at 319 E. Mulberry Ave., San Antonio, TX 78212. (Earlier post with photos.)

Besides the free coffee and breakfast tacos, the monthly breakfast is an opportunity to see the KIPP model with your own eyes. The confidence and poise of the students who will lead you on a tour of their own school—it’s stunning. I hope you can attend. RSVP to Victoria S. de Diggs at (210) 880-8080 or vdediggs@kippsa.org.
