About Democracy Prep at the Stewart Campus

Democracy Prep Public Schools was founded in 2005 in New York and now serves over 5,000 students across more than a dozen schools in New York, Las Vegas, and San Antonio. The success of Democracy Prep shows that students, regardless of what zip code they are born into, can perform at high academic levels.

Because Democracy Prep is a nationally recognized network with proven success in increasing student achievement and helping students to reach their full potential, leaders at SAISD sought a partnership that would transform Stewart Elementary, a campus that prior to becoming a Democracy Prep school was at risk of closing under the state accountability system. Democracy Prep at the Stewart Campus opened in 2018 as an in-district charter school in SAISD with Democracy Prep as its partner.

Democracy Prep Stewart provides students with a rigorous, college-prep academic program along with co-curriculars that help them become better learners. Civic education starts in kindergarten, and is taught both in the classrooms and out in the community. The goal is for scholars to learn that they have a voice and practice using their voices to effect positive change. The dual language program builds cognitive skills in Spanish and English. Every student participates in fine arts education, including visual arts, theater arts, and can also take mariachi.

During the advisory block each day, students build study habits, learn organizational skills, and practice social emotional learning. The school culture is built on the DREAM values: Discipline, Respect, Enthusiasm, Accountability, and Maturity.

Democracy Prep at Stewart prides itself on being a neighborhood school. There is an emphasis on community engagement and culturally responsive practices. Monthly family events bring parents and caregivers onto campus for celebrations.
