SAISD Enrollment Guide for Choice Schools in 2021–2022
Are you looking for a school that will be the right fit for your child? That might be a charter school. They are tuition-free public schools that are funded by the state and are open to all students. Most of the charter schools in our area are open-enrollment public charter schools; they are authorized by the Texas Education Agency and are not part of any traditional public school district. However, some charter schools, known as in-district charter schools, are part of a traditional public school district. The state gives charter schools greater autonomy so they can offer students something different—a unique learning model, or strategies to meet the needs of underserved students. Charter schools welcome students with special needs and English language learners.
The process for enrolling your child in a charter school takes some planning, but we are here to help. Some schools have open seats right now, but the best thing to do is plan up to a year in advance. Learn about schools by attending open houses, information sessions, and school tours. Then, submit a free application during the open enrollment period. If a school gets more applications than there are seats, they will hold a lottery to determine who is accepted and who is waitlisted. We recommend applying to several schools in case you’re waitlisted at your first choice school.
