The San Antonio Symphony is offering one more Family Concert in the 2013-14 season: Peter and the Wolf, on Sunday, April 13, 2014. The symphony has invited my family to attend and has given me a family pack of four tickets to give away. To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment: What is your favorite character/instrument combo in Peter and the Wolf? At the end of the day on Wednesday, April 9, I will randomly select one of the comments as the winner; the Symphony will notify the winner by email on Thursday, April 10, and your four-pack of tickets will be waiting for you at the concert on Sunday, April 13.
Peter and the Wolf, written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936, introduces the sounds and instruments of the orchestra by associating them with characters in the drama:
- bird = flute
- duck = oboe
- cat = clarinet
- Peter’s grandfather = bassoon
- wolf = French horns
- hunters = woodwind theme
- hunters’ guns = drums
- Peter = string instruments (violins, violas, cellos, and double bass)
Prokofiev wrote a different musical theme for each character, and a script that explains the action. At the San Antonio Symphony’s concert, News 4 meteorologist Albert Flores will serve as the narrator; Akiko Fujimoto will conduct. Also on the program: 17-year-old Michael Villarreal, winner of the 2013-14 YOSA Concerto Competition, who will be playing the first movement of the Cello Concerto No. 1 by Dmitri Shostakovich. 
The concert will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2013 at Laurie Auditorium at Trinity University (map). It’s worth coming early: starting at 1:30 p.m., your kids can play in the instrument petting zoo, with symphony musicians on hand to help your children try instruments like violins, cellos, etc. The hallways will be lined with tables offering crafts, quizzes, and musical demonstrations. Symphony mascot Count Bassie will be out and about and posing for pictures with fans. Individual tickets are $16 for adults and $8 for children. Order online at sasymphony.org, call the Symphony box office at (210) 554-1010, go through Ticketmaster, or buy tickets at the door.
