Monte Vista is one of San Antonio’s great historic neighborhoods. The Monte Vista Historical Association is the glue that keeps the neighborhood together. The book San Antonio’s Monte Vista: Architecture and Society in a Gilded Age by Donald E. Everett discusses the founding of the MHVA and describes the beautiful and eclectic homes.
Monte Vista is located in the San Antonio Independent School District. Most elementary and middle school students are assigned to Cotton Elementary and Twain Middle School; however, most students living east of Shook Avenue are assigned to Hawthorne Academy (Pk-8). Hawthorne Academy is an in-district charter school, so students outside its boundaries can apply to attend. All Monte Vista high school students are assigned to Edison. A variety of private schools are located in or near Monte Vista.
The Landa Library, a branch of the San Antonio Public Library, is a center for family activities in Monte Vista. The Landa Gardens Conservancy maintains the grounds and the children’s playground.
