Most schools give students two weeks off for winter break so families can enjoy some much-needed time together. If you’re looking to avoid cabin fever or want to keep young minds curious and learning, there are a number of winter camps and events to enjoy. Here’s a roundup of some of our top picks for educational opportunities and outings to enjoy over the holidays.
Winter Break Camps
The DoSeum
The DoSeum will host holiday camps on January 2 & 3, for children ages 3 – 11 years old. Kids will explore STEM and art concepts, learn to innovate, create, and solve problems—all while having fun. Find out more about DoSeum holiday camps here.
San Antonio Zoo
The San Antonio Zoo runs winter break camps from December 30 – January 3 for kids in Kinder through 6th grade. All camps include up-close animal encounters, zoo tours, fun activities, and outdoor games, set in a nature-based play environment. Learn more about winter break zoo camps here. The Witte
The Witte Museum hosts its winter camp December 30 – January 3 for kids ages 6 – 12. Campers will explore the Witte’s newest exhibition, Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids, while uncovering the origins of some of the world’s greatest folklore. Find more winter camp info here.
Family Outings
San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology
Every Saturday is family day at SAMSAT. Make a visit between 10AM – 5PM and learn who Nikola Tesla was, how a Tesla coil works, and why the Tesla coil sends energy through the air that turns on the lights. Science Mill in Johnson City
The Johnson City Science Mill is just a short drive out of town, with a host of learning opportunities throughout their exhibits. In addition to their regular interactive exhibits, they’ll be hosting 3 days of creative making opportunities December 26 – 28. They’ll be making music with a techy twist. San Antonio Public Library
In addition to their regular children’s story times, there are a number of holiday-themed activities, movies, and other fun opportunities to learn at various public library locations. The McNay Art Museum
On Sunday, December 29, the McNay is hosting a family-friendly Parisian double feature of Ratatouille and The Tale of Despereaux. Children under 12 are free, and adults and children alike can enjoy exploring the museum before and after the showing. Find the details here.
