Big Mama, author of “Sparkly Green Earrings,” talks about schools

Have you read Sparkly Green Earrings, a motherhood memoir by Melanie Shankle, author of The Big Mama Blog? Highly recommended.

I was lucky enough to hang out with Melanie at a book club meeting recently. (Gulley couldn’t make it—stomach bug.) While munching on fruit and crackers and dip, the first question out of my mouth was, “Schools! Will you name names?”

“Absolutely,” Melanie said.

I asked about the second grade teacher of doom. “Retiring!” And Melanie told me her name, but I forgot.

The preschool with the strict potty training expectations? Yeah, but they have a new director, and I know other families who’ve had good experiences there, so I’m not going to diss them here.

I also learned that Alamo Heights United Methodist Weekday School is Big Mama-approved. And Gulley-approved, which is probably even more important.

Thank you, Melanie, for spending time with our group. Your book sparked a beautiful, open-hearted discussion of motherhood. Can’t wait for the next one!
