Gallery: Sneak peek at the new IDEA South Flores campus

Classes start Wednesday, August 21 for grades K, 1, 2, and 6 at IDEA South Flores, the new charter school campus at 6919 South Flores Street, San Antonio, Texas 78221 (map). And tonight, Tuesday, August 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., is Meet the Teacher night for all grades.

On Monday afternoon, my kids and I got a sneak peek at the new campus. Banners in English and Español offer words of wisdom, including the “IDEA 55,” based on Ron Clark‘s Essential 55. The owl mascot and school colors help build team spirit. High-tech touches include the computers in the iLearning Hotspot and the fume hood in the science classrooms. My kids’ favorite part of the tour was the brand-new playground.

We also got to meet the school leaders: Angie Arismendi, Principal of IDEA South Flores Academy (grades K-5), and Constantine Polites, Principal of IDEA South Flores College Prep (grades 6-12). On Monday afternoon, they were leading training activities for the teachers. The College Prep classrooms are decorated with college pennants, and the Academy classrooms have reward charts to track and reinforce good choices. All activities are geared towards the goal of “College for all children — Universidad para cada nino.” (It works. See this earlier post about college college signing day, when all of the IDEA Public Schools graduates from the Rio Grande Valley announced their college plans.)

Look how far the campus has come since this March.
