About George Gervin Academy
George Gervin Academy was established in 1996 as a Generation 1 charter school. The George Gervin Youth Center was founded in 1989 by George “The Iceman” Gervin, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame who played for the San Antonio Spurs from 1974 to 1985, and his sister, Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, who currently serves as the Texas State Representative for District 120. Barbara is still involved in the school as Special Projects Coordinator, and her son, Nathan Hawkins, is CEO and Superintendent.
The mission of George Gervin Academy is to cultivate growth and promote academic excellence and accountability through passionate teamwork. Their vision is to elevate an enduring legacy of high expectations. The core values are GPAAT: Growth, Passion, Academic excellence, Accountability, and Teamwork.
When George Gervin Academy first opened, it served non-traditional students in grades 9–12 who had experienced setbacks in their educational journeys, and they are still committed to helping these students succeed. Teachers and staff members meet individually with students to identify learning gaps and obstacles to success. Working together, teachers and students create plans that will fill learning gaps and ensure that students succeed in high school and beyond.
Over time, the school has grown, adding campuses and expanding to serve students as young as PK-3. They take pride in serving emergent bilingual students as well as students who speak English at home and want to build Spanish skills.
