Great Hearts Monte Vista open-enrollment lottery will be on January 21, 2014

Great Hearts Monte Vista Open-Enrollment Lottery January 21, 2014 | San Antonio Charter Moms

Great Hearts Monte Vista will hold its open-enrollment lottery at 6:30 p.m. January 21, 2014 in the Barshop Auditorium at Temple Beth-El, 211 Belknap Pl., San Antonio, Texas 78212 (map). A recent email from Peter Bezanson, Superintendent of Great Hearts Texas, emphasizes that families are not expected or required to attend. Families will be notified about their child’s enrollment status within two weeks of the lottery. The phone number for general information and enrollment questions (e.g., sibling priority) is (210) 888-9485.

Now that the open-enrollment period has ended, Great Hearts Monte Vista is still accepting applications online, but they will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

I spoke with Dr. and Mrs. Bezanson recently, and they are pleased with the positive response from San Antonio families—over 1,000 applications for the 2014-15 school year. In the new year, Great Hearts Monte Vista will organize events so that families can meet teachers and administrators and form a community around the new school.

Are you thinking about the lottery, or are you putting it out of your mind so you can enjoy the holidays?

    • Allyson,

I checked with Great Hearts Texas. They said that grades 6-9 will be included in the lottery, but they are still working on a facilities plan that will allow them to offer those grades.

So, it sounds like the parent demand is there, but they need to find enough classroom space.

I hope that helps answer your question.

  1. Do you have any idea what the breakdown is on applications? For example, 500 for kinder, 500 spread out among other grades, etc… I’m wondering if there is even distribution among the applications. Thank you.

    • Jill, I don’t know the breakdown for Great Hearts Monte Vista.

The typical pattern is more applications from “transition” years. So, you might expect a LOT of applications for kindergarten and 1st grade, tapering off to 5th grade, then a smaller bump at 6th grade, a dip for 7th & 8th, and then another bump for 9th. But that’s just a typical pattern for a new charter school — Great Hearts Monte Vista might be different.

My understanding is that Great Hearts Monte Vista will be holding a lottery for EVERY grade.

      Does that help?
