Love football and charter schools? Watch Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt present a gift to KIPP: Houston

Is your household, like mine, so football-obsessed that even the early-preseason Hall of Fame Game (August 4, 2013, in case you’re keeping track) is noted on the calendar?

San Antonio has traditionally been a Dallas Cowboys market, but the Houston Texans have been so fun to watch for the past few seasons that their fan base in San Antonio is growing. Witness: Houston Texans Fan Club of San Antonio; “A game of Cowboys and Texans”, Tom Osborn, San Antonio Express-News, December 22, 2012; “Texans winning over S.A. fans”, René A. Guzman, San Antonio Express-News, January 13, 2012.

So, in the spirit of sharing my family’s excitement about football season, and my admiration for the KIPP network of no-excuses charter schools (including KIPP: San Antonio), let me share this clip from April 2013, in which Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt (ESPN), through his foundation, gives an awesome pep talk and donates $60,000 for sports equipment to KIPP Liberation and KIPP: Spirit:

Kudos to J.J. Watt for using his high profile to support public education—especially the high-performing KIPP charter schools. For another recent sports story, here is my earlier post about San Antonio Spurs legend David Robinson helping IDEA Carver students get in the spirit during the NBA playoffs.

So, San Antonio football fans, are you following the Cowboys this season? The Texans? Both? Leave a comment to support your team.
