Registration open now for Saturday Morning Discovery at Southwest School of Art

The other day, my kids and I went to a Sunday afternoon jazz concert at the Witte. An empty-nest couple from Government Hill struck up a conversation; they praised me for introducing my kids to jazz music so early. (Thanks!) The wife recommended that we try a program that her kids had really enjoyed: Saturday Morning Discovery at the Southwest School of Art. Registration for 2012-13 is open now, and I’ve heard that it fills up fast.

Here’s how it works. It’s free. It’s meant for kids ages 5 to 17 and their parents. You register online in advance for one month of Saturdays in the coming academic year (2012-13, but no classes in April). The program meets from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Ursuline campus. There are a variety of art stations: painting and drawing, origami, weaving, silk-screen printing, stained glass, clay, etc.; four Saturdays in a row gives your kids (and you!) a chance to try everything.

We are looking forward to visiting Saturday Morning Discovery when our kids are bigger. In the meantime, Artworks Art Studio is an excellent program with sessions for younger children, too.
