San Antonio Farmer’s Market As Classroom


Teaching opportunities are everywhere. On Sunday mornings, my kids and I like to visit the Quarry Farmers & Ranchers Market. The prices are round numbers, so my son (age 5) can practice math skills by helping me count out the money.

Last Sunday, we bought some Cowgirl Granola from Heather Hunter. We read the sign to pick out the flavors: one pound of Original Stock and one pound of Cranberry. As my son and I counted out the money, he pointed at George Washington on the one dollar bill and exclaimed, “That’s a President!”

We also picked up some herb plants from Pedro at My Father’s Farm. Gardening teaches science, healthy eating, and caring for the environment.

The farmer’s market is a friendly place, too. My son saw his summer school teacher and his kindergarten classmate’s little brother.
