If your student is reaching the age where they’re starting to think about what they want to do beyond school, there are a number of San Antonio internship opportunities for high schoolers that may be beneficial for them. Although some teens may opt for a paid job to start earning their own income, an internship or volunteer position can help pave the way for college and their future career in ways that a retail job may not.

Here are some resources and opportunities for high schoolers looking for internships and volunteer opportunities in San Antonio. Some of them may have limited seasonal internships (i.e., Summer only), and others offer opportunities during the school year only. Be sure to read the full details for the program that appeals to you on the organization’s website for the most up-to-date information.

San Antonio Works

San Antonio Works runs paid summer internship opportunities for students, partnering them up with businesses that go through an application process. Internships typically run 6 to 8 weeks over the summer, and are open to high school students between the ages of 16-20 years old.

San Antonio Museum of Art

The San Antonio Museum of Art is an art museum located downtown, with a collection spanning 5,000 years of global culture, and is the only encyclopedic museum of fine art in South Texas. SAMA runs a Museum Teens program made of volunteers ages 14-18, who assist local artists and staff during First Sundays for Families events at the museum. Teen volunteers must commit to volunteering for at least 4 family days during the school or calendar year. Learn more about applying to be a Museum Teen here.

Artpace Teen Council

Artpace is a non-profit contemporary art gallery in downtown San Antonio, and is free and open to the public 7 days a week. Through their Teen Council, Artpace invites high school students ages 15-18 years old to become advocates for contemporary art through this 9-month paid program which runs through school year. McNay Teen Art Guides

The McNay Art Museum is a modern art museum housed in 1929 mansion, specializing in American and European art from Medieval to contemporary. They invite high school juniors and seniors to volunteer as Teen Art Guides, helping to facilitate education programs, serving as social media ambassadors, and special events, with the ability to earn community service hours. The DoSeum

The DoSeum is San Antonio’s only children’s museum, which promotes learning and discovery through interactive exhibits and creative programs. Internships with the DoSeum are offered year-round, and are unpaid. Internship opportunities include graphic design, exhibit tech, human resource, art studio, and more. All internships provide students with the opportunity to grow in their skills, gain workplace experience, and growing their network in a fun and creative environment. These are just a sampling of the internship and volunteer opportunities. If you’re interested in learning more about first-hand experiences from teens during their own internships, Startups San Antonio has an excellent article interviewing students from the International School of the Americas.
