January is School Board Recognition Month, which is a good opportunity to be more aware of what our local school boards do and who serves on them. This guide will help you learn about the many school districts in the San Antonio area, including the district your family lives in. You can find out who represents you on your local school boards, when they meet, how to speak up at meetings, and when school board elections are happening. This is one path for how we make change happen in our schools.
Not sure where to start? If you know an address—say, for your home or business, or your children’s charter school—but are not sure which school district it’s in, check the My Bexar Community Dashboard or do a property search at the Bexar County Appraisal District.

Here are some resources to learn more about school boards in the San Antonio area.
- Education Service Center Region 20 (ESC Region 20) has a list of public school districts (ISDs and charter schools) in its service area, as well as their contact information.
- Go Public is a joint marketing program among a group of fifteen independent school districts in the San Antonio area.
- The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) offers resources about board service, including guidance for understanding board members and advice for prospective board members, as well as an explainer about what school boards do.
- The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has resources about school boards and a school district locator.
