The Texas Education Agency oversees charter schools, so the fact that commissioner Robert Scott is stepping down soon will likely have an impact on the charter school community.
So, who will Governor Rick Perry appoint as Scott’s successor? Here are some thoughts from a recent editorial in the San Antonio Express-News:
For the good of Texas, Perry should select an independent thinker with a strong education background, who can work with a sometimes dysfunctional board of education to move public in this state forward and who lacks a personal agenda. . . .
Texas has no shortage of recently retired superintendents to pick from, including several from San Antonio. That list includes Richard Middleton from Northeast Independent School District, John Folks from North Side and Robert Durón from the San Antonio Independent School District, who took a job with TEA as deputy commissioner for finance and administration in April.
