We are proud to share this guest post by Haley Segovia, Director of Outreach at Fusion Academy San Antonio, offering tips about things you can do with your teen this summer vacation, based on their flex learning model.
It’s been a hard couple of years for students. The effects of the pandemic are different for everyone, but as our teens navigate their formative years, they could use extra support. You may also be feeling burned out and getting anxious about what this summer break will look like for your teenager. I’m here to help!
Take a Break
This summer everyone needs a break. Whether this means a family vacation or just allowing your teen (and you!) some time to rest and recharge, this summer should be a time they can relax a bit. Recharging looks different for everyone, so work together as a family to ensure everyone is getting what they need.
Catch Up or Get Ahead with Learning
Summer learning loss has always been a scary topic, but even more so when interruptions in stability are causing learning gaps. Summer is a great time to catch up, remediate a class, continue momentum, fill gaps in learning, and more. At Fusion Academy, we offer classes for credit and tutoring at a special summer rate because we know it’s an important time for learning. Our classes are one-to-one: one student and one teacher per classroom, so classes are completely personalized for each student’s strengths, interests, and learning preferences.
It’s also a great way to get a tough class out of the way before the fall semester. Let us help your student lighten the load. Fusion is an accredited school, and you can take a credit-bearing class with us to transfer back to your middle or high school.
“Fantastic experience at Fusion this summer. My son loved learning here and was very engaged. He actually LIKED being here, liked his teachers and looked forward to his summer classes.” —Liza, Fusion Parent
Bolster Executive Functioning Skills
I’m hearing from a lot of parents and local professionals that students are especially struggling with their Executive Functioning (EF) skills. You may see this in your teen if they’re struggling to manage tasks, focus, or stay organized. Like any other skill, these important skills need to be supported and practiced. The summer months are a great time to focus on this area outside of the pressures of the school year. We offer tutoring support for EF skills where students will work with one of our teacher/mentors on whatever they need the most help with.
With every school year, kids are asked to manage more and more. One week out of summer that helps them get a better grasp on how to manage often competing activities and responsibilities will be time well spent. If there’s one thing that you can offer your child this summer, it’s our EF support. We’ll set your student up for success next fall and beyond. And the bonus—your life gets easier when your kids can better their own.
Support Their Mental, Social, and Emotional Health
As we all know, it’s been a tough time for students and their mental health. Their social lives look different, and emotions are either running high or all over the place! At Fusion we care not only about academics but also about the social and emotional health of our students. Our teachers also act as mentors for our students, and we incorporate Social-Emotional Learning into our academic and social programming.
“Our son attended summer school at Fusion three years in a row and it changed his life. His teachers spent one on one time with him to make sure he understood the material they didn’t just rush through it. It gave him confidence and made him love learning. One of the best decisions I made as a parent is enrolling him in Fusion.” —Tracy, Fusion Parent
Prepare for Their Future
If your teen is thinking about college, it’s prime time to start preparing. The earlier you get started, the better the middle school and high school experience is for our kids. High school students can begin thinking about what schools they’re interested in, what they might want to explore as a major, looking at scholarships, and more. Working with a College or Post-Secondary Counselor who can provide their expertise will get your older kids further in the college process. It’s an area where we parents are often overwhelmed, and that carries over to kids. I’d gladly hand the reins over to an expert! Learn about Fusion’s Post-Secondary Counseling here.
Have Fun!
Whatever you end up doing with your teen this summer, it’s important that they have fun! That’s a priority for us at Fusion. If you have any questions or want to learn more about what summer could look like for your student at Fusion, reach out to us here. We’d love to share about how we can make this a fun and successful summer for your teen.
