In November 2012, the Texas State Board of Education granted Generation 17 charters to eight applicants. (Read more in this earlier post.) Where are they now?
- BASIS San Antonio is building its first campus in the Medical Center area in Fall 2013 (earlier post)
- Village Tech Schools is opening a campus in Cedar Hill (Dallas area) in Fall 2013
- Eleanor Kolitz Hebrew Language Academy (also known as Ben Yehuda Academy) will open in San Antonio Fall 2013 in space formerly occupied by a Jewish day school (earlier post)
- C.O.R.E. Academy will open in South Houston in Fall 2013
- International Leadership of Texas has two campuses, in Garland and Arlington (Dallas-Fort Worth area) opening in Fall 2013
- Pro-Vision Academy (Houston) is transitioning from an in-district charter
- Great Hearts Texas is expected to announce its first San Antonio campus location soon, likely to open in Fall 2014; Great Hearts Texas has also filed a Generation 18 charter application for Dallas (earlier post)
- Dallas Scholars Charter School seems to be in trouble; it appears that they were not able to meet all the of the Texas Education Agency’s contingencies in time, and so the State Board of Education may rescind its authorization at the July 18 meeting of the Committee on School Initiatives. “July 2013 Committee on School Initiatives Item 5”, Texas Education Agency, updated July 11, 2013.
Last year, the Center for Teaching and Learning narrowly missed getting a Generation 17 charter; this year, they have reapplied for a Generation 18 charter, which is still under review. “Nonprofit wants to start open-enrollment public charter school”, Kassia Micek, Courier (Montgomery County), January 17, 2011.
