School Options for Families Affected by SAISD Rightsizing

The board of trustees of San Antonio ISD has approved a Rightsizing plan that closes 15 schools in the district, displacing thousands of students before the 2024–25 school year. We’ve created a guide to Rightsizing in SAISD, and if you’re new to this topic, we recommend reading that blog post, too. This guide uses our resources to empower SAISD families who are impacted by rightsizing to look at all of their nearby public school options, including SAISD Choice Schools and open enrollment charter schools, with an eye towards school quality and unique learning models.

Helping SAISD Families Find School Options

The SAISD board has determined which schools are set for closure or merger, and which schools are designated to receive new students. We have summarized those changes in our SAISD Rightsizing guide. But what other school options are available for families affected by SAISD Rightsizing? We have resources to help:

SAISD can be divided by neighborhood feeder pattern—in other words, all the schools that feed into each comprehensive high school. Those area also correspond to single member districts on the SAISD Board of Trustees. In and around each of these zones, there are tuition-free, open enrollment public charter schools that SAISD families can consider. There are also schools that offer similar learning models. Some open enrollment charter schools offer transportation as well.

Options for Learning Models

Up to this point, this guide has been organized around location, focusing on which open enrollment charter schools are located in the same neighborhoods as the schools that SAISD will close under its Rightsizing plan. However, families may be more interested in finding new schools with similar learning models. Also, members of the San Antonio Charter Moms discussion group on Facebook can help answer your questions about learning models, so we encourage you to join the group and post your questions there.

Child-Centered Learning

If you appreciated the project based learning model of a school like Lamar Elementary, then you might be looking for a school that offers child-centered learning.

Dual Language

If you want your child to continue in a dual language program, then consider these options.

International Baccalaureate

Your children can continue their International Baccalaureate education at one of these IB World Schools.

More School Options

In addition to the learning models discussed so far, our guide also offers information about classical education, college and career readiness, functional needs schools, credit recovery schools, culturally responsive schools, single-gender schools, and STEM schools.

If you are looking for an extended school year calendar, check out Castle Hills Elementary in NEISD.

Preschool grades are available at some open enrollment charter schools.

Not all open enrollment charter schools offer transportation, but when they do, it makes the school accessible to more families.

SAISD’s Rightsizing plan, by closing 15 schools, will displace thousands students across the district. We hope that this guide will make our resources more accessible and will empower SAISD families who are impacted by Rightsizing to look at all of their nearby public school options, including open enrollment charter schools, with eye towards school quality and unique learning models. In spite of the disruptions of the SAISD Rightsizing plan, San Antonio families will persist in finding the right schools for their children.
